Microsoft Exchange Server is part of Microsoft’s line of server products. It is essentially a centralised email storage point, where users have their own mailboxes containing their email, calendars, and contacts which can be accessed using various email clients, such as Microsoft Outlook, both from inside the local network, and externally over the internet. Mailboxes can be shared between users. Email and other data can be easily backed up as it is all stored in one location.

Rather than accessing your email data over your internal network, you access it through your internet connection. Both of these services are more basic email services, and traditionally used more for home users. A POP3 mail server receives e-mails and when a user connects to the mail server to retrieve their mail, the messages are downloaded from the mail server to the user’s hard disk. IMAP mail servers are a bit more complex than POP3 servers and allow e-mail messages to be read and stored on the server until the user explicitly deletes them. This and other characteristics of IMAP operation allow multiple clients to manage the same mailbox. Clients may store local copies of the messages, but these are considered to be a temporary cache.
