What is Microsoft Exchange?

Microsoft Exchange Server is part of Microsoft’s line of server products.. It is essentially a centralized email storage point, where users have their own mailboxes containing their email, calendars, and contacts. Mailboxes can then be shared between users or accessed remotely. Email and other data can be easily backed up as it is all stored in one location.

Hosted Microsoft Exchange

Hosted exchange gives businesses the opportunity to utilise all of the benefits of Microsoft Exchange without the cost of setting up an internal Exchange Server. Rather than accessing your Exchange data over your internal network, you access it through your internet connection. This means that you can access your data from anywhere where you can access the internet, as well as your data being safe from worst-case scenarios such as fires, floods, or earthquakes which would destroy any servers and backups in the immediate vicinity.

Hosted Exchange is a complete solution with features such as:

  • Up To 25GB Mailbox
  • Outlook Web Access
  • Mobile Connectivity (iPhone, iPad,  Blackberry, Android and other Smart Phone Integration)
  • Spam & Virus Firewall
  • Automatically Backed Up

What is POP3 Email?

Stands for “Post Office Protocol”, POP3 is a simple, standardized method of delivering e-mail messages. A POP3 mail server receives e-mails and filters them into the appropriate user folders. When a user connects to the mail server to retrieve their mail, the messages are downloaded from the mail server to the user’s hard disk.

When you configure your e-mail client, such as Outlook (Windows) or Mail (Mac OS X), you will need to enter the type of mail server your e-mail account uses. This will typically be either a POP3 or IMAP server. IMAP mail servers are a bit more complex than POP3 servers and allow e-mail messages to be read and stored on the server. Many “webmail” interfaces use IMAP mail servers so that users can manage all their mail online.
